learning to scrapbook

Things that we can scrapbook include the following:1. Life milestones – having a baby, birthdays and anniversaries, weddings, etc.2. Graduations3. Annual celebrations as holidays 4. Everyday happenings5. Extraordinary events 6. Family history7. Vacations and trips
In other words everything in life can be a memory worth scrapbooking. It’s up to us to find the moments we want to share in our scrapbooks. Some technical terms for scrapbooking are:Acid-free: Over time, acid discolors and fades photos and will eventually destroy almost anything it comes in contact with. Look for products with pH (acidity) factors between 7 and 8.5.Archival quality: Materials with this label have been tested to determine that their acidic and buffered content is within safe levels. Buffered: Even acid-free paper may become acidic over time when exposed to acidic scrapbook memorabilia. Buffered paper reduces this breakdown and is less likely to become acidic.Crop: A get-together where friends and others gather to create scrapbook pages. Also what you do to a photo to remove unwanted portions of it.Layout: The arrangement of items on your scrapbook page.Lignin-free: Lignin causes paper to yellow and become brittle when exposed to ultraviolet light. Most paper, other than newsprint, is lignin-free.Photo-safe: This term is similar to archival quality but more specific to the materials used with photos. It means the item is both acid- and lignin-free.Scraplift: Copying a layout done by another scrapbooker. Just fine if you’re not planning to have it published!Scrapper: This is you! A scrapper is a person who does scrapbooking (also called a scrapbooker).Spread: Two scrapbook pages, usually completed on the same topic, that appear opposite each other in an album.Every new endeavor comes with its own jargon. Scrapbooking is no different. Keep these terms in mind when shopping for supplies and when making your first pages.
Ok now you’re thinking I am ready to get started…but don’t know what size of page you want to do or even where to begin.
Some basic supplies we will need to get started include the following:
1. Cardstock2. Scissors and paper cutter3. Adhesive of some kind4. Pens in various colors5. Ruler6. Embellishments of some kind that will go with the current page you are working on7. Last but not least you will need your pictures you want to scrapbook
A. Getting started you will need to start with the cardstock you want use whether it is a solid color or a print…for me I start with a solid and use prints as a further embellishment to my page. See example..
Notice I started with a basic color, orange, then added another basic color, red, and a print patterned paper . For further embellishment to my page I used some stickers for decoration and stamped letters onto paper then cut them out for the title. Notice I left the space on my page for my picture, I haven’t picked out the exact picture I want to use on here yet.
When you get started with your own page it will be easy to get overwhelmed with all the products on the market. From the papers to embellishments to adhesives and scissors and cutters it will seem like it is hard to choose from. For most its picking out the colors we want to use..for others it may be items that are bold and bright..and even for some it’s sticking to a budget… When I scrapbook I tend to use the darker shades of colors like darker oranges and reds to dark purples blues and greens and on some pages I have done I used really bright colors like yellows and glitter papers. But most of all I try to stay within my budget when I scrapbook, sometimes that’s hard to do…. B. Scissors and paper cutters are items that are used to trim papers and pictures. Some scissors and cutters are designed with a straight edge. Some are designed with a decorative edge. Which ever one you use will depend on the type of layout and how you want your page to look based on your own preference.C. Adhesives are used to hold your papers and pictures together. They can come in liquids or gels or in runners and tapes. Again these are based on your own preference.D. Pens are used to do your journalling on your pages. They can be in various colors that can be coordinated with the page you are designing.E. Rulers are used to help with spacing of pictures or embellishments on your page or determining how to cut your pictures. F. Embellishments are the little extras that can bring your page to life so to speak. They can include stickers, as in my example above, a transparent overlay that has a decorative border, buttons, ribbons, brads, eyelets, glitter or even flowers. Another way to add embellishments to your pages is to use stamps. There are several kinds of stamps. You have wooden blocks that have a rubber stamp on oneside and then you have the clear arcylic blocks and stamps that allow for a more accurate placement when you are stamping on paper. There are so many designs out there you would have to look for those that strike your fancy. An example of ribbons and decorative brads and stamped items and glitter.
An example of ribbons and transparent overlays. An example of eyelets, ribbons, and stickers.G. Again last but not least are pictures. Those can be just about anything from you taking pictures of yourself, of other people, or pictures of nature outside, animals, or just about anything you want to take a picture of.
Now you want to decide on how big of a page you want to do for your book. There are various sizes that can be used. The standard sizes for scrapbooks include the following:1. 6 x 6 is usually the smallest book made2. 8 x 8 3. 8 ½ x 114. 9 x 95. 10 x106. 12 x 12 which is the largest book madeAgain it’s your preference on which size you use. These pages used in my examples are for a 12 x 12 book I made for a friend. One of the biggest challenges is to find exactly where to begin it can be very confusing when you first start to scrapbook or when you go into the scrapbook store for the first time or look at your first scrapbook catalog. You will be thinking “WOW!!!!” I want it all…well I am here to tell you so do I….each time I go into a scrapbook store or looking into a scrapbook catalog, namely a Close to My Heart catalog or a Paper Wishes Catalog, I am thinking I want this and this and this….I could spend hours making wish lists for items I want…but that is another story for another time. Some items I tend to look for when I go into a scrapbook store are embellishments, stamps, and papers. I usually have an idea on what kinds of things I want to use on my pages, so don’t be afraid to take your pictures you want to scrapbook with you when you go into a scrapbook store or look at a scrapbook catalog. Once you get the hang of it you will soon be on your way to being a terrific scrapbooker, just takes time and practice and lots of experimenting. In preparing this for my blog I got part of my information from various websites and magazines I frequently visit and read, like for the terminology for scrapbooking. When I visit websites I look at the galleries or when I read the magazines I look at the layouts for the design of a page as I never know when my next idea for a page will show up.
This is an example of stickers and ribbons on a page.

life of a scrapper

Life of a Scrapbooker
Scrapbooking for me is a way of life…it is a way to remember loved ones who have passed on from us, a way to remember special days in our lives, a way to relax well for me anyway, a way to spend time with family and friends who scrap. I tend to scrap moments that include those I love, areas or locations I have been to or seen, special moments in my life, like my graduations from high school and later college, the birth of my son, birthdays, holidays and family celebrations. I tend to use colored papers in dark colors and earth tones, prints that aren’t too wild. I love some of the stamps I have and use them frequently on pages. My mom and I have scrap nights on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with her two sisters that scrap. We have so much fun. I tend to listen to a variety of music when I scrap so I never or try to never leave the mp3 player at home on scrapnights . I get my layout designs from a wide variety of places, including the three great books I got from Close To My Heart that not only show you the layouts but give you the cutting dimentions and instructions on how to put them together…for some reason a lot of the time my pages never turn out like them lol I either have left something off or added something different usually based on my own preference. For Halloween I made three kits with instructions on how to cut the papers and how to do the lay out for my mom and her sisters and thinkin that they all would do the same thing but needless to say they have their own different styles cause all of the layouts were different from one to the next. Just goes to show that every one has their own distinct personality when it comes to scrapbooking. So it’s all good.In this life of a scrapbooker there are lots of trends, but I definitely try to do my own thing. I use different products from different companies for different pages. I tend to look at different catalogs for items I want…got lots of wish lists lol. Keep thinking one of these days I am going to have it all but then I also get to thinking if I did that it would get old. Not to mention I would probably run out of money as well lol. I think if we all used the same products day in and day out we would get bored with it all and just stop scrapin’. I definitely don’t want to do that I love to scrap. I have started to make premade books when a friend of mine asked me to do one for her wedding, I said sure why not. Was the only book I didn’t take pictures of the layouts I done, well not the only one I didn’t . Shoot. But did hers in different shades of purples, white, and grays. Sure turned out pretty even if I do say so myself, lol. She wanted to give me some money for that one and I said no this is my gift to you for your wedding. You only have one of those in your life if you are lucky to have found your mister or miss right. She liked it so much she had me do another one for her. This time I had her pick out some papers from a Close To My Heart catalog. Once we got those picked out the book just came together quite nicely. Her stepmother has had me make several for her as well. One time I made a Halloween book for a raffle that the company I used to work for that was really cute. Another book I forgot to take pictures of after I got it finished. At least I knew the winner of the book made good use of it, she’s got pictures of her grandson in it dressed in his Halloween costume. Now if I could figure out a way to sell some more I would have it made. I got a fall one I am sending to school with Hannah for her fall festival at school. And I have one done for me that when I find the right pictures to put on it. Just don’t know. I put an ad on Craig’s list at my cousin in law suggested so who knows. Would say that the life of a scrapbooker is never dull. There is always something to scrapbook about in this thing we call life.
